What i've been doing in COSI all semester
Well, I have:
Helped maintain and teach others the way of the 3D printer
I have worked to teach others about the 3d printer, how to use it, how to install software necessary to use it on their own machine's, and given general introductions to CAD.
I have also worked on maintaining the 3d printer, and ensuring appropriate maintenance procedures are developed and followed. In addition, i have ensured the proper lubricants are ordered(as we appear to have lost the old ones)
Held a workshop
I held a workshop on how to terminate ethernet cables to an RJ-45 connector and a punchdown block, and how to test f it was working in an aftermeeting slot. My plan s to repeat this workshop in the spring semester
Worked on COSI infrastructure
I worked with Jared, Bobby, and Graham to implement STP in the labs, and this turned into resetting the password on some switches we no longer had access to, and subsequently replacing a switch whose ports and management interface ad failed
Like it or hate it i worked with Maintenance to address temperature control issues in the labs. Specifically, our temperature deadband was adjusted from 73-78 to 70-73 IIRC (ill have to double check those numbers). Either way it resulted in a lower temperature during the summer time
I also worked with maintenance to fix the persistent heat issue in the server room (which has triggered some...unique... actions in the past. Turns out it was an uninsulated return line in the convection heaters
And on a less positive note i learned that we are essentially SOL on the 10+ year old split ACs should they fail.
If you know where to look you can find a more comprehensive write-up of our HVAC state, how the Science Center HVAC system works, and some of the past issues with it
Gave Lightning Talks
I gave a brief talk last semester on the dangers of power supplies using a document from the IEEE as a presentation aid. In particular, the diagram on the bottom of page 3 was helpfull. I believe this is a good idea to leave up as a PSA
I gave a lightning talk on being an expert in lines
I also gave a talk on "lab history"
My personal favorite was destroying lab hardware (given to me for the express purpose of destroying with a USB Killer. The optiplex in question died a quick death, and it turns out that we destroyed the north/south bridge, but not the CPU. The CPU did have what appeared to be marks from arcing in it, but still functioned
I gave a Halloween themed lightning talk on I have no mouth and I must scream an AI related scary story
Assisted CUGI with networking and technical infrastructure, and worked on passing it on to Thomas
The Clarkson University Gamers Initiative has had a long, and symbiotic relationship with COSI, whereupon members (previously Christan Mesh, currently myself and hopefully Thomas Withiam in the future after i graduate) assist with large(25-100 people) LAN parties, providing Ethernet, power delivery solutions that do not trip breakers, and traffic monitoring for ass-covering.
After walking Thomas through the current setup, the plan is to rebuild the routing box with new features and fully document it next semester. As it stands it uses TCPDump, IPTables, and other software to route and monitor traffic
Assisted with Open House
I spoke on my accomplishments as a result of the labs, and answered question of prospective parents. I also helped showcase our infrastructure and my personal projects
