COSI OSI
Clarkson Open Source Institute Open Source Initiative is a project I am putting together with Keegan Lowenstein and Zach Shepherd to help spread the advantages and word of open source software and Linux. Our plans are to teach two separate workshops, one about open source software available on Windows, and another that will do the same but also go into Linux and its uses. I am putting together for 3 COSI credits.
Le Tux Revolution
This may seem a little out of our freshman league, but our idea is to start simple, such as with these lessons and workshops here at Clarkson. We hope to go further though, whether it's us or people that take the penguin baton and runs with it. We want the values and goodness of open source and Linux to go beyond Clarkson into businesses, schools, and the community. How far it will really go we have no clue, but we know this is the time to strike and we're leading the charge.
Current Status (04/03/07)
Currently we have the initial plans of how each week is going to work. We plan to divide this project essentially into two workshops; teaching about open source software and about Linux, and another that is focuses on general open source and its availability as an alternative on Windows. This way, those interested in open source but not really interested in Linux can still learn by going to the Windows workshop, while those daring enough to atleast attempt to switch can attend the other workshop to learn both open source and Linux. With the plans laid out, we are now working out syllabi for each of the workshops. The workshop we held for basic Linux usage really helped us get an idea of how planning a workshop out works.
[Current Master Plan Record] [Links of Reference]Linux Beginner's Workshop
The team has already displayed our hard work with a beginner's Linux workshop that was given March 3rd. We discussed the advantages of using Linux over Windows, what it still needs to improve compared to Windows, how to install Ubuntu by making a partition, and basic usage and nifty features and apps on Ubuntu. Overall the workshop was a success, with thanks to Erika who put up flyers. A good amount of people with different amounts of experience with Linux already, different majors attended, and they even requested to hold another workshop that featured more advanced uses and commands in Linux. We're likely going to work it into next semester somehow. The syllabus is available to download on the menu to the right.
