Linux on Toshiba e-series Pocket PCs
Information and links for owners of Toshiba e340/e400/e740/e750/e800.
I've recently gotten Linux to work on my Toshiba e740, WITHOUT ANY HARDWARE MODIFICATION! This
required extensive work, which was fairly difficult to perform due to the lack of information
available for installing Linux on to this particular Pocket PC. I rely heavily upon the hours of
dedicated work and support Spyro has provided in porting and configuring Linux to Toshiba e-series
Pocket PC Intel Xscale-based PDAs. Here, I merely elaborate upon, and outline, Spyro's work in order
to create a concise installation guide.
Disclaimer and important information: My installation guide does NOT require one to open or physically modify
their Pocket PC in any way, whereas Spyro's site provides information on both physical and
non-physical techniques. I, personally, do not recommend performing hardware modifications to your
Pocket PC's mainboard unless you are absolutely sure that you know what you are doing. Neither Spyro
nor myself can or will be held responsible for any damage that may result from such an UNRECOMMENDED
procedure. Additionally, although I have not personally recognized any issues with my Toshiba e740
Pocket PC using the software-based (modification-less) bootloading technique, I do not and my success
does not warrant (explicitly or implicitly) that the procedure I outlined or Spyro developed will
necessarily work on and not damage your Toshiba e740, other Toshiba e-series model, other Toshiba
series, or other make Pocket PC handheld device. Use of the modification and/or modification-less
techniques are at your own risk, and we cannot and will not be held responsible for any mishaps!
