COSI Final Report Spring 2004
by Kevin Roberts
I was a member of the z/VM GUI Project, and I attended a 3 hour meeting almost every Sunday where we worked on the functionality and module description documents, and discussed various issues that came up in the planning, and issues that would eventually arrive in the implementation, of our project. Below are all of the things that I did outside of those meetings.
Things I did this semester regarding the zSeries eServer z/VM GUI Project
- Documented how to edit files via the command line (CMS) interface.
- Documented how to get information about real CPUs.
- Documented how to give users priority over total system resources.
- Documented how to use an escape character in CMS so that special meanings of characters are ignored. (Much like the \ character works in *NIX)
- Researched a way to feed Dirmaint a monolithic User Directory file and have it update itself using that - Turned up possible but infeasible due to having to shut DirMaint down and waiting up to 15 minutes on a system with lots of guests to come back up.
- Documented how to force a certain guest to receive the logon/logoff messages sent to the System Operator
- Implemented a Java CMS User Monitor program which connects to a zServer, displays the users online, polls every so often for users logging on and offline and updates the display accordingly. Also provides buttons for forcing users offline and for XAUTOLOGing users. This program is fully functional with error checking and error message boxes popping up for any error the user needs to know about. The only current problem is if the connection to the server is terminated abnormally, everything else has been tested and is determined to be working correctly.
Other things I did in COSI
- Contributed to the making of a script to backup files on a webserver
- Wrote an iptables configuration script which blocked all ports aside from SSH.
