COSI Final Report Spring 2004 : Eli M. Dow
Long term projects going forward
Joined Kyle, Mike, and James Kim on a conference call with IBM to obtain possible grant money for the Clarkson Open Source Institute. Discovered 2 possible routes. SUR Grant vs Faculty funded research. Need more exploration into each. Some possible proposed solutions based on existing strengths in COSI.
Shorter term projects completed
Discovered method to mount Novell home directory under Linux. Sent full documentation to COSI list.
Documented a method for using campus LDAP server with evolution, the most popular mail client for gnome, thus providing enhanced addressbook functionality.
Got flapjack (James Kraetz) and Todd working on, and interested in python gtk programming. This was done by introducing them to the CVS server for the Linux installer project done last year and pushing them in the proper direction.
Helped numerous students during lab hours between 8 am and 5 pm.
Wrote a very nice backup script to use on our servers to enable archiving of server contents to a DVD (on animal).
Attended all COSI regular meetings except the first.
Helped many students get their wireless cards working via use of windows drivers wrapped under Linux.
Emailed mini summarization/information page about the various X servers floating about in the community right now. It is often difficult to keep them straight if you don't religiously keep up on the technology.
Wrote a plugin for Gaim with flapjack that was subsequently made obsolete with new releases of their source code. Porting on hold until after semester has ended.
Converted my Linux machine to use udev and hotplug to more closely follow technologies being used by the lab build.
