COSI STUFF

Lightning talks

I have not explicitly given any lightning talks yet this semester though if people are interested I will hapily do one on the diffrences on diffrent RAID level and their limitations, along with raid-z and deduplication.

Teaching People

I have been teaching Gordon some things about computer science that they have not already picked up on, such as VScode and Git/Github. I have also been teaching several people about Network Attached Storage devices and computer networking. I also taught a couple people about virtual machienes and how to set them up.

Introducing People to COSI

I have introduced serveral people to COSI one of which has been a Chemical Engineer. I have also given several tours to people that I have been convincing to join COSI. When I have noticed tours of perspective Clarkson students going past I will frequently give a breif speil about COSI to them, so that they would get acurate information instead of the flaud information from the tour guides.

Helping Esports Inventory/Find Their Missing Assests

I spent multiple hours on Friday 10/4 along with Gordon reinventorying Esports Inventory to make a proper list of what is missing. We also found that they had major issues with how badly assembled the computers were, which may have been caused by whomever might have taken the missing inventory.

General COSI Teaching

I have taught several peopel about the services we run here at COSI from FSU, book, and DNS to even Steggo (the IBM PS2 that Gordon has put a lot of work into). I have also help people find the recourses that they were looking for or needing for their projects randing from power supplies to the iFixit kits.

Documenting COSI's books

I have created a new branch on COSI book so that Gordon and myself can start documenting all of the books in COSI's libraries. The branch is named "libraryDocumentation".

Meara has also helped inventory a couple rows of the books. As a result of Gordon and Meara's help the books in the shelves in COSI have been documented. The ITL and 2nd Floor COSI still need their books to be documented.

Helping to Fix computers

Another one of my friends had a very poorly built computer which was having stability issues. I rebuilt the computer so that it was built correctly and then work of figuring out the stability issues, which I was unable to do that night. Another one of their friends traced the issue back to being the motherboard was switching between PCIe generations. That was causing the GPU to periodically reset and stop displaying output.

I slightly helped document what parts Weaver had for his personal computer and try to diagnose the issue he was experiancing.

I helped to disassemble and fix a friends laptop which had its battery fail in a way that was preventing it from booting.

My housemates spare laptop had issues and I diagnosed the issue to being the battery not having a charge which was easily fixed.

Installing Servers

I helped move around and install several servers into the COSI server room. The servers include: Elephant, Bacon, Bootstrap, and Janet.

SERVER STUFF

Uniteruptable Power Supply

I purcahsed a UPS for my homelab which lasts for a maximum of ~14 minutes before running out of power with my current load. As a result I need to set up the software for having it send shutdown commands to all of my servers upon power loss, so that way everything has time to perform a clean shutdown. Unfortunatly the software from APC is being very problematic so im currently stuck trying to get it set up.

I have looked into using NUTS but unfortunatly NUTS does not suport the model of UPS that I have.

Selfhosted Router

I have started work on setting up a set of three VMs running OPNsense to have a cluster for my router to make it so that I can update any of my servers without having any down time.

Personal NAS

I am currently running a NAS that has TrueNAS Scale as its OS and have been spending some time working on getting the 10 gigibit networking set up. The 10 gigibit network setup has been put on hold until I can find a resonably priced 10G card which fits into my NAS which is compatible with the rest of my 10G network (or if i can find transcievers which will work with the current card and the rest of my network).

I have increased the capacity of my NAS by adding a 3rd vdev of drives, but ever since doing so caused some reliabilty issues with the pool. I diagnoised the issue to be as a result of the imalance of vdev utalization, which unfortunatly the was not much that I could do about it since I have enabled deduplication accross my whole NAS. But the issue has now been resovled as a result of removing unneeded snapshots and using the pool which has gotten it more balanced over time.

Selfhosted DNS

I have set up two new selfhosted DNS servers to replace my old one to make it so that I have a bit more redundency with my network.

Tailscale

I have started looking into Tailscale as a possible solution to allowing at minimum my laptop to connect into my homelab network to be able to have access to all of the recouses that I have running and so that I can work on my homelab from COSI, while not needing to set up a full on proxy server using soemthing like Orical Cloud.

Not Started

I currently have plans to set up the following servers:
