Temperature Monitoring Project

The goal of this project is to accurately display the temperature of the server room of the COSI/ITL Lab. We currently have 2 sensors reading temperatures through a serial port using Python. The temperature from the sensors gets stored into a MySQL database every minute with a time stamp so we know when the temperature was obtained as well. Our next step is to display the change in temperature for all the sensors neatly on the website. To properly display the temperature we decided on using two methods. The first method is showing a heatmap of the server room from a bird's eye view using javascript which will display the location of the sensors and the color around the sensors will indicate the temperature, red being hot and blue being cold. The second method to display the temperature is a scatter plot of the change in temperature over time. This gives a much more precise reading of the temperature in the room as well as the change in temperature. Currently we are scaling our overhead view picture to match the server room more accurately and we have just found an appropriate scatter plot API that meets our needs (turns out Google Chart's API doesn't support multiple variables despite looking so 'flashy'). More info on this project can be found on our Wiki page.
