This is the page of Peter Ehrlich, a junior Mech-e at Clarkson University. I have a large interest in computer science, specifically in regards to web 2.0 application development and entrepreneurship. I have a lot of experience, having started with basic html websites for family in 2000 and more recently taking on contract work for website backends (server side coding) in the Boston area. If anyone has questions or is looking for help on website building, please feel free to contact me, I'd love to help. :: peter.i.ehrlich at google mail.
Almost all of my learning has been done online through the help of blogs and other online documentation. For this reason I encourage you to check out my del.icio.us account, which is full of useful links. (For anyone not familiar with the site, it is a social bookmarking tool designed for sharing bookmarks. It has been feverishly adopted by webdevs and webdesigners, and really is an amazing resource for finding answers.)
Stuff Done Fall 09
One of my ongoing projects was a versatile (powerful, lightweight, customizable) php script for handling form submissions. This is done and I am quite happy with it, it has the ability to validate and clean form data, create and send emails, and save records to a database, and can be used with either ajax or conventional web requests. You can find it on pastebin (read: syntax highlighting) or on this site, here.
Other stuff..
Client Side:
- work with jQuery & Prototype
- Form validation w/ jQuery, including custom validation regex (like phone)
- CSS files, valid html markup
- Image making (mostly w/ photoshop & illustrator), including sprites, transparencies, image compression techniques, and color palettes.
- Javascript, for everything from forms to drag & drop to traffic tracking
- On the fly client page editing with fckeditor
- php includes for modular site design (one .html handles navigation for example)
- Cross browser compatibility (back to IE 6) - images, layout, and JS
Server side:
- Php form submission: validation, mailing, database submission, and error handling
- mySQL database setup, with phpMyAdmin and over ssh
- Ruby & Ruby on Rails. This huge field covers a lot, but the short of it is that I can build (full fledged, database driven) web applications with an MVC architecture.
- Apache server administration, on Linux and Mac, including passenger pigeon and mod-jk
- GIT and github, including setting up a git repository and connecting to other projects' repositories
- Capistrano site deployment, recipe writing.
- Designing and committing database schema on sQlite3 and mysql
- Interfacing w/ the twitter api, to search and collect tweets as well as posting through oAuth token authentication
- Designing and implementing popularity ranking algorithms
- Handling users, including login, account creation, and security
- languages (filetypes/markups) used by RoR, including .yaml, .erb, rjs
Misc stuff:
- Site traffic tracking w/ Google Analytics
- Using mindmapping software to plan websites (extremely useful!)
- Other preferred software (mac only!): cssEdit, TextMate
- More useful sites: sxc.hu, iStockPhoto (stock photography - free, paid), Internet Explorer Collection (cross browser testing)
Future Goals & aspirations include:
- Test procedures with RoR
- Facebook API experience
- iPhone app development
- CMS experience - Joomla!/Drupal
