COSI Fall 2006

As of now I am becoming interested in web development, and recently I have been trying to learn some PHP. I am currently trying to learn MySQL and how to use it with PHP scripts.

What I have accomplished
I have been continuing adding functionality and working the bugs out of the simple txt forum I started last semester. Currently the server is running off my desktop with Apache2. I have also installed MySQL on my machine and am working to learn that.

I have been experimenting with vanilla forum, an open source PHP/MySQL forum setup. I am working on modifying the basic setup to suit my needs. Vanilla seems to work very nice, it has a simple and easy to use interface.

What I am working on
I am working to try to learn MySQL and configure it correctly. I hope to be able to learn the basics soon, and write a new forum to store the data in MySQL tables. The simple .txt format works well for now, but would not be too efficient for large amounts of data. Also I'm trying to move the site desktoplamp to a different server as opposed to having it run from my desktop. I encountered difficulties with that, finding problems with write permisions, as the PHP scripts would fail because the forum data files could not be written to.

Other Stuff I was trying other variants of Linux on my laptop (I was using Ubuntu before), but unfortunately as I was trying to set up partitions, there was some sort of error and now my hard drive is fubar. That was a rather annoying setback as I don't really feel like paying for a new HD at the moment, so my laptop pretty much just collects dust now.
