Why are am I here?
This page was created as a one stop shopping for my cosi summaries.
While viewing the content on this site you should be able get a good
indication for what I have done in the past 16 weeks with my cosi time,
along with what tools and references I found to be useful in my adventures.
Over the past several weeks I feel I have spent my time wisely. I have
been given the chance to develop a prototype version of what we call the
PortageGUI along with the opportunity to learn more about the Linux
operating system. Having the time that cosi has allowed me opened and really
giving me the time to improve my coding abilities by taken in depth
looking at great pieces of code.
Having said all that below you should find some examples of code, projects
and a small howto on some of the things I did and found useful, Enjoy....
COSI Summaries:
Projects and Code:
- Graphical Package Installer for Gentoo Linux
This originally started as CS450 project but soon found its way into my cosi time.
I believe one of the main reason we were to tackle this project and complete a
prototype version of this was mostly due to the fact that I was able to use some
of my cosi time to work on the development of the application. Working on this
project was really a great experience, not only did it improve my C programing
skills but it gave me the opportunity to learn and use several libraries and tools
such as Glib, gdb, and subversion.
- Idea Database
The idea database project quickly fell apart due to several reasons.
I believe one main reason for it's failure was lack of interest among the original
group members. The main idea behind this database was to create a centralized repository
for current and future cosi ideas.
- Lab Reboot Server
This is a small server socket application written in java that simply listens on a
given port for a given command, once this command is given the application will
reboot the system after X seconds. This application was written to run in the
background on windows lab machines providing a easy method of rebooting all lab PC's
at once. Further work should be done with this code to ensure commands are issued
from a trusted source.
- HOWTO: USB thumb drive working in Linux
Having a usb thumb drive is only any good if you can get it working with your system.
This is really just a short howto on getting your usb thumb drive working with linux,
and so I wont forget how to do it later down the road.
- A Look at GNU tool: ls
Having the opportunity to look at production source code gives you a better understanding
for what real world code looks like. I was really surprised to see how much the difference
between some of my work and production work, especially the extensive commenting. I was
also surprised to see how so many #define's and 'prep work' before the functions.
- IBM Linux Challenge: Centralized Package Management System
- IBM Linux Challenge: Graphical Package Installer for Gentoo Linux
